TOUR LENGTH: 229km
MAIN SIGHTS:
On this 230 km Cserhát Tour ride, we will explore the region north of Budapest: Nógrád county and the gentle Cserhát Mountains. Our first stop is Veresegyháza, located 25 km from Budapest, where we find Central Europe's only bear sanctuary. In addition to bears; wolves, lynx, and even lions live here too.
After saying goodbye to the bears, we continue our journey north, all the way to the Hungarian-Slovak border. Our journey takes us through rolling terrain and picturesque towns, where we will have many opportunities to stop and taste some Hungarian cuisine. We will visit Balassagyarmat, a typical Hungarian town with its picturesque baroque old town, and Szécsény, where we can admire another baroque masterpiece, the Forgách Castle.
After Szécsény, we will turn south and head to one of Hungary's most famous sights, Hollókő. Hollókő is a 17th century village that is an unparalleled example of folk architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The village is overshadowed by the 13th century Hollókő Castle, from which there is a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Leaving Hollókő, we will slowly say goodbye to the friendly Cserhát.
